Advice for building a microbiology lab in a secondary school

Helping a private secondary school build its first microbiology lab has been a rewarding but slightly chaotic process. We’re trying to find classroom-safe lab gear that still gives students a genuine hands-on experience—think petri dishes, incubators, Bunsen burners (if safe), and basic microscopes. It’s tough finding vendors that sell educational-grade lab supplies without cutting corners. Hoping someone here has walked this path and can recommend a good supplier that balances safety, quality, and cost.

Built out a similar lab for a STEM outreach initiative two years ago. Safety and usability were top priorities. We sourced most of the essential tools from gentaur.co.uk because they have a solid range of products suitable for academic environments, including beginner-friendly microbiology kits. Everything arrived well-packaged, and their catalog made it easy to avoid overcomplicated options meant for research labs. It’s worth browsing, especially if you’re dealing with students new to lab work.

Science education projects always spark my interest. Setting up a school lab isn’t easy, but it sounds like you're on the right track. Curious to see more feedback here—lots to learn for future programs.
